Consuming the Son of God – the Word – within us is the call to become Christ-like. 

THE CALL TO BECOME CHRIST-LIKE

Purpose of human life, according to God, is to become members of the Divine Family of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. God is holy and only anyone holy can enter into the Family of God. To be holy is to be attached to Christ, to become a member of His Body.

The Sacrament of Baptism demands from us that we become Christ-like. We have been grafted into Christ and get the life sap from Him. As St. Paul writing to the Romans says,

Romans 11:17 (New International Version)

“If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root,”

Galatians 4:19 

“My little children, for whom I am again in the pain of childbirth until Christ is formed in you.” 

Hebrews 12:14 

“Pursue peace with everyone, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.”

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE

Our conceiving the Son of God is possible only with the Grace of God; as Mary conceived the Word, we could also do.  

God chose Mary to be the Mother of His only Son. She consumed by the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Luke 1:26-38

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 36 And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

What we are is the product of our thoughts. Most often our thoughts are unconsciously chosen from the world – environment, friends, family, society.

What we would become in the future is the product of what we are thinking now.

Romans 12:2

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Colossians 3:2

Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

 Luke 8:11

“Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God.

Proverbs 23:7

"As someone thinks within himself, so he is." 

Dr. Caroline Leaf says this in her book Switch On Your Brain,

“As we think, we change the physical nature of our brain. As we consciously direct our thinking, we can wire out toxic patterns of thinking and replace them with healthy thoughts.”

 In essence, she says, science is proving free will and relationship between thoughts and reality.

Romans 12:2

"Do not copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect."

Psalm 46:10 

“Be still and know that I am God.” 

The powerful effects of prayer and meditation have been well-documented in recent years, again confirming what Christians should already know.

Capturing your thoughts requires stillness, and many Christians have no time. And as long as we have no time for prayer, our thoughts, emotions, and feelings will continue calling the shots.

 Philippians 4:8

Whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things. 

Characteristics of Divine Thoughts:

  • Noble
  • Right
  • Pure
  • Lovely
  • Admirable
  • Excellent
  • Praiseworthy

What you choose to see determines your reality. You have the power to change your reality by shifting your focus.

 Dr. Leaf says, “When you think, you build thoughts, and these become physical substances in your brain.”

Galatians 2:19 -20

"For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Ø  Do I want to become a member of the Divine Family?

Ø  Is it the most important priority in my life?

Ø  Am I willing to sacrifice everything reach this goal?

Ø  What is the place of the Sacraments and the Word of God in my life?
